With the Cannes film festival in the news recently for its 60th anniversary. Is the Cannes film festival an independent film festival? How about the Sundance film festival as well?

Both are for independent film makers so they can show case their work and get distributors in many cases.

The term independent is a tricky one here. Independent movies started out meaning movies produced outside the Hollywood system. However, Hollywood started making so-called independent movies with larger budgets and name stars to capitalize on the term, thereby changing a movement in the movie industry to another “genre” market.

The larger festivals don’t tend to be as friendly toward low budget independents and are often out of their reach because entering, attending and promoting can be costly. There are U.S. and Canadian festivals that offer lower cost alternatives to marketing independent movies and give the indie movie company a greater chance of being spotted by distributors.

Most festivals do accept independent submissions, so I guess you could call them independent in that regard.
